Blue Bird Skies

You wrote me letters and left too early on our date. I wrote a single poem and you left. What kind of love were you?

88 MPH Without the Gas

Nothing will ever be good enough for you if you can't slow down just a little longer. Please, take my word for it, before you learn the hard way and lose your wheels and the people around you.

Blurred Lines

Really, I've always loved you, but this is a feeling unlike any other kind of love. It's a friendship and a family, it's romance and hope, it's killing time and laughing at once.

Youth of Summer

He road the bus home with me,
May was sticky on our skin as
mosquitoes sipped our blood and bones.

I remember playing basketball
out in the driveway and how we waved
at all the cars passing by hurriedly.

Then we went inside for lemonade -
the perfect treat, or so I thought
before he lifted me onto the counter...

soon I was entangled in his arms
swimming in his warmth, a moment later
I was queen of Louisiana summertime.

Nex’t thin’ I knew he was in my arms
and I was in his mouth. Nothing hungry,
but there wasn’t any innocence either.

Now that I think about it,
my first kiss was mostly bitter-sweet.
I’ll just blame that bayou heat. . .

Wallflowers and Populars Alke

Sometimes it's easier to grow up knowing who you are or what you care about than it is to grow up already knowing who you are. And it really can be those slight differences in awareness that shape our futures into the stories we'll tell with our final few words.

Summer Road Trips

I suppose we all need gravel beneath our wheels and gas in the tank every once in awhile. We all just want to take a road out to a city we've never been before, every once in awhile. Thank you for remembering to say goodbye to me before taking off.

First Things First

I like to think that beauty outshines the madness - that petals are more brilliant than the thorns could ever be.

Maybe that is how you've managed to keep me alive for so long with nothing more than a glass jar, a handful of dirt, some water, and a spoonful of lullabies.

Flashing my Teeth

I've gotten you out of my system. Finally, I've flushed all the poison out and cleansed myself up. You will not kill me, now you cannot even phase me.

All for the Better

I've run away my habits of coffee all day, being afraid to sleep, and feeling uncomfortable every time I pass a mirror.

All of it without you here harping in my ear.
